Data collection arrangements
The Early Detection of Lung Disease Pilot will invite ever smokers who have smoked within the last 15 years, from selected GP practices in the Manchester region, to attend a Lung Health Check (LHC). Subjects will be assessed for the presence of respiratory disease (symptoms and spirometry) and have lung cancer risk calculated using a validated calculator (PLCO2012) and those with a risk over 1.51% will be offered a low dose CT scan of the chest followed by a further scan 12 months later if the first is negative. Those subjects attending the service will be asked to consent for data collected as part of the LHC and the CT scan in those over the risk threshold to be stored on the Early Detection of Lung Disease Database.
Data to be stored includes:
1. Participant identifiable information including: name, DOB, postcode, NHS number
2. Clinical data including: symptoms, lung cancer risk calculation measures (smoking exposure, education, family history, previous cancer history), previous medical history, respiratory medications
3. Height and weight, BMI
4. Spirometry
5. CT scan report
6. CT scan (stored on the UHSM Picture Archiving and Communications System (PACS) as is standard practice for NHS images).Research programme
The database will support the evaluation of the Early Detection of Lung Disease Pilot Service and will also be a valuable resource for future research to explore the lung health of a community based cohort.
