  • Research summary

Research in palliative care is very important to ensure that patients with a life limiting condition such as advanced cancer are getting the best possible care.
The palliative care services offered throughout Europe are very different and patients referred to palliative care services have a lot of different care needs. In large scale research projects it is important to know that the groups of patients you are comparing are similar, so these differences in services and patient characteristics are a significant barrier to research in palliative care.
To overcome this barrier, the European Association for Palliative Care (EAPC) has developed a list of characteristics that describes patients with advanced cancer that are referred to palliative care. This is known as the EAPC basic dataset.
This study is testing this basic dataset to see if palliative care patients and healthcare professionals (HCP’s) find it acceptable and easy to use. 15 Patients and 15 HCPs will complete a questionnaire based on the dataset, and then have a brief interview with a research nurse to discuss if they had any problems or concerns, whilst filling it in.
