Research summary
The current diagnostic imaging pathway for a patient suspected of having acute gallstone disease is that of initial abdominal ultrasound, followed by further imaging (usually an MRCP) if they are suspected of having signs/symptoms due to gallstones in the common bile duct - recent local audit suggests that around 50% of patients suspected of having acute gallstone disease will go on to have an MRCP, irrespective of the findings of the ultrasound scan. In this study we aim to determine whether directly proceeding to MRCP will provide an overall cost-benefit, as well as improving outcomes for the patients themselves. We also intend to use the images obtained in this study to assess the potential for a new imaging analysis software (MRCP+ - developed by Perspectum Diagnostics Ltd) to detect biliary tree dilatation due to obstructing gallstones
