  • Research summary

The aim of this academic project is to produce an infographic ( a user friendly pictorial information sheet) which describes the various treatment options for Dupuytren’s Disease (DD), and which fulfils the current requirements for fully informed consent. Patients can then make an appropriate decision for their treatment. DD is a condition in which fibrous connections form between the finger tendons and the skin of the palm, causing the finger to bend .\nThe information required for the infographic will be obtained through a literature review of the different treatment options for DD together with the efficacy, recurrence, complications, recovery and cost of each treatment. A review into the background of how informed consent has developed in medicine will also be needed to ensure the infographic fulfils current requirements.\n Field testing of the infographic will be carried out by a focus group of specialist surgeons, who will validate the information . Another focus group formed of patients who have actively sought treatment for DD from the supervisor’s hand clinic at Southampton General Hospital will be invited to attend a one-off short meeting, held at the clinic. Using guided discussions the group will be asked whether the infographic is patient-friendly, free of jargon, clearly designed and easily understood. Patients will benefit by being fully informed about the variety of treatments options of the disease. \n There is limited literature regarding methods of qualitative analysis of patient preferences available in the literature , especially where complicated factors of circumstances and preferences are involved in a treatment choice. Ways to categorise and analyse handwritten notes will need to be researched, before being applied. In this way, participants views can be used to help in the design of the the final infographic produced. \nThis undergraduate study will also be an opportunity to learn about ethics required for research.
