  • Data collection arrangements

    Samples will be sort from patients with suspected or confirmed cases of TB (active or latent), granulomatous disease, atypical TB, respiratory viral infections. Data collected from participants will include demographic and clinical information relevant to the research carried out. Participants will be identified and approached by a member of the local clinical team or a member of the research team. Written and verbal information about the study will be provided and any questions answered. Informed consent will be taken by a qualified doctor or research nurse. The participant and person taking informed consent will both sign a consent form. After consent samples will be collected from collaborating hospital sites by members of the research team under supervision of the local clinical team and may be surplus diagnostic tissue samples or blood and tissue samples taken for research purposes only. Samples will be immediately transported to the laboratory due to their perishable nature. Sample transport will be conducted in accordance with guidelines for category B hazardous biological substances.

  • Research programme

    This tissue bank has been fundamental to the success of the TB Research Unit and has aided ground-breaking research conducted over the last 5 years which we hope to continue with this renewal application. The tissue bank supports a wide research programme aimed to develop and rigorously evaluate new tools for improved screening, diagnosis and prevention of tuberculosis (TB), other granulomatous respiratory diseases and respiratory virusal infections like Influenza by undertaking cutting-edge translational research into the immunological and genetic components of these diseases in patients and their contacts at risk of infection. The group comprises members with varied expertise and includes post-doctoral scientists, clinical training fellows, research nurses, research assistants and PhD students; with several major international collaborations in Italy, Germany, USA, India, Turkey, Zimbabwe and South Africa.
