  • Data collection arrangements

Brain, spinal cord (where clinically relevant) and cerebrospinal fluid are collected from deceased donors who have a diagnosis of dementia or other neurological conditions and also from older people who are not known to have been affected by these diseases. Tissue is stored and subsequently used in dementia research or research into other neurological conditions. Witnessed, informed consent is given by the potential donor or, in the case of a potential donor who is unable to give his own or her own consent, by a person in a Qualifying Relationship to the donor.

  • Research programme

Tissue donated to the South West Dementia Brain Bank (SWDBB) underpins research locally, nationally and internationally. The aim of the Bank is to support a wide range of studies on the causes, disease mechanisms, diagnosis and potential for treatment of dementia and other neurological conditions. In only a 6 year period (2011-2016), the Bank has provided Material that has contributed to over 100 research papers published in peer-reviewed journals, met 133 tissue request applications and amendments, accepted 207 donations and supplied over 35,000 samples to researchers. For this reason we feel justified in calling the SWDBB an invaluable resource, which without the altruistic gift of our donors and their loved ones would simply not have been possible.
