Research summary
The aim of this study is to explore older people and staff experiences of the care older people receive within urgent and emergency care in hospital, especially during their time in accident and emergency (A&E).
Older people are the largest group of patients who use the NHS, and yet we know little of their experience of urgent and emergency care. When older people go to hospital, their needs are more complex, their stay is longer and they are often discharged from A&E without a complete assessment of their health and social care needs.
A number of recent reports have found major deficiencies in the care of older people in acute hospital and staff not being respectful or providing dignified care. Therefore improving older people’s experience of urgent and emergency care should be a priority to meet their individual needs and to ensure high quality care.
Through one to one interviews with older people and focus group discussions with staff recruited from one local hospital, the information gathered will enable opportunities to identify new ways to improve how older people are cared for and to improve the quality of their care experience. A further aim is to identify approaches to care that will promote dignity and address discrimination of older people when being cared for in an acute hospital.
The results will be shared locally to inform current service delivery for older people, with a view to also sharing the research findings at national and international levels. Recommendations relating to potential improvements in urgent and emergency care for older people will be made. The findings will also be used to educate staff who work with older people in these settings to improve patient careREC name
