  • Research summary

The variety of easily accessible entertainment is bewilderingly huge and ever changing. This includes games systems, online computer games, television programmes, films and video blogs to name but a few. Viewing devices are cheaper and increasingly available and children are often very adept at new technology in a way that can often outstrip their adult carers. As paediatricians, we are interested in what children are exposed to and this project aims to find out more about what children are watching and when they are watching it. We are studying primary school age group as they are often more independent viewers and often share their favourite viewing habits with their friends and family. We also want to find out what measures parents are using to control their viewing habits either by direct supervision or parent control programmes and how effective these are.
The project is a simple questionnaire that a researcher will take both the carer and child through in person.
This study is not one where the supervision of parents and carers of children is primarily being criticised; there are many circumstances where children may be allowed free access to the internet and television and in the vast majority of cases we expect this to be wholly appropriate. There are a number of educational, entertaining and freely accessible games and information which children are aware. Unfortunately however, sometimes children can stumble upon illegal or unsuitable material. St George’s has Child Safeguarding procedures and if anything of this nature comes to light in this project, we will guide the carers through the process. We will include a leaflet on internet safety.
We hope the results of this project will be of interest to parents, teachers, doctors and anyone helping support families in guiding children exploring the world around them.
