Data collection arrangements
The biobank at King's College London collects clinical samples from patients, processes and stores them. Clinical samples (most usually blood) are collected from patients after they have read an information sheet on the biobank and have provided written informed consent. Sufficient time will be permitted for them to consider their decision. Researchers can request some of the clinical samples for their research project. This biobanking process enables medical research to progress faster and more efficiently than previous methods. The types of samples we collect include blood samples, urine, faeces, joint fluids, cerebro-spinal fluids and any excess material that has been taken for routine testing. Before these samples are collected clear consent for these procedures is obtained from participants. The samples are stored at Guy's Hospital, London SE1 9RT.
Research programme
The biobank supplies clinical samples to a wide variety of research programs taking place locally, nationally and internationally. The biobank's initial/principle focus is on those diseases which cause significant problems within our local area of South East London (e.g HIV, hepatitis B/C viruses, bacteraemias, immunological disorders, cancer and inflammatory diseases). The collected samples are provided to both researchers in University and Industry -anywhere in the world - to assist in the development of better diagnostic kits and drugs etc.
