Research summary
This is a 4 month intervention study designed to assess the feasibility and effectiveness of the combined intervention programme of dietary restriction and physical activity on the musculoskeletal function of 30 obese elders with knee osteoarthritis (OA) recruited through the outpatient clinic, the Royal Orthopeadic Hospital, Birmingham. The outcome measures are focus group and questionnaire to assess feasibility. Also, physical function (WOMAC) scale, body weight, waist circumference and BMI, body composition, musculoskeletal function; knee ROM, lower limb power, physical performance; stair climb; timed up-and-go, pain intensity using WOMAC pain subscale, quality of life (SF-36) and markers of joint remodelling. Three assessment sessions (at baseline, 4 and 16 weeks) will be undertaken at the University of Birmingham (School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences - SportExR). At baseline all outcome measures will be recorded and a 3 day food diary will be given to participants to complete at home. The study will be conducted at ROH physiotherapy gym by an expert physiotherapy technician for one month. Participants will receive a physiotherapy usual care programme for knee OA (stretching and strengthening exercise) for 60min/week. Then participants will continue to exercise in their local gyms for a further 3 months. Participants will follow a concurrent dietary restriction programme which will be planned and modified (if needed) by a clinical dietician
