Research summary
The project will acquire brain images of the chemical messenger dopamine in patients with bipolar disorder. Many scientists believe that the symptoms of psychosis are related to an excess of dopamine. With the PET scanner and the special tracer Fallypride, a picture of the brain’s dopamine system can be obtained and teach us about the specific parts of the brain that may be involved. This is a pilot study (of two patients) with the intention of applying the methodology to a larger cohort of 16 patients and 16 normal controls on successful implementation.
