Research summary
Many people with a long-term health condition also experience psychological distress. National Health Service (NHS) Talking Therapies (TT) offer support for these patients through specific Long-term conditions (LTC) services, however at present these services are largely overlooked in the scientific context. This project aims to provide a greater understanding of the patient population that accesses treatment through an NHS-TT-LTC service. This study will be an analysis of routinely collected quantitative outcomes for patients referred to the Doncaster NHS-TT-LTC service between 2018-2025. All referred cases will be explored to allow for the different pathways through the services to be understood. The data of interest will be pseudonymised outcome scores on the NHS-TT Minimum Dataset, which will have been completed during an initial assessment and every treatment session that patients attended, and the patient attendance/drop out information. Various analyses of the dataset will be undertaken to attempt to answer 11 pre-defined research questions. The proposed project has several implications for clinical practice, including establishing benchmarks for the acceptability and effectiveness of NHS-TT-LTC treatment pathways. It may also identify underrepresented patient subgroups or those with poorer outcomes, as well as factors linked to lower engagement or outcomes. These insights could inform improved outreach and treatment adjustments.
