Research summary
The DOLORisk study is a research project undertaken at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, where 150 participants, with known neuropathy or those at risk of developing neuropathy due to other conditions such as diabetes will be enrolled. The study will comprise a single visit, during which participants will undergo a range of investigations including completion of questionnaires, tests of nerve function, provision of blood samples, skin biopsy and some quantitative sensory testing. The study is designed to look, in detail, at the changes in sensation occurring as a consequence of having neuropathy. The research group will also be examining the effect that neuropathy and neuropathic pain has on peoples’ psychological well-being, functionality and quality of life. In particular, it will look at how pain may make people anxious, depressed, interfere with their daily living or interfere with their sleep. The study aims to acquire a better understanding of the effects of neuropathy and neuropathic pain, and also develop better techniques for assessing these in clinical practice.
