Research summary
Oesophageal cancer can currently only be cured by invasive surgery. Understanding the stage of the disease is crucial to helping surgeons and patients make the right decisions regarding this. Lymph nodes are often the first site of spread for cancers, and being able to quickly identify the presence of tumour can be valuable information to the decision making process.
We have already shown it is possible to tell the difference between healthy and diseased tissue in the oesophagus, by analysing the light emitted when we shine a low powered laser on to it. This technique is known as Raman spectroscopy (RS), and we would plan to use this technique to assess the lymph nodes for disease as well. This would provide the clinician with rapid diagnosis, avoiding the delay and cost of laboratory analysis by pathologists.
