Research summary
At the end of their operation patients who have undergone a heart or lung transplant have a breathing tube (with a sealed ) cuff inserted to facilitate breathing on a ventilator for typically 48-72 hours. Often tiny amounts of secretions by pass this cuff leading to a a ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP). We aim to trial a tube with a more effective cuff attached to a special constant inflator ( The pneuX system). This has been shown to reduce VAP in routine heart surgery patients
