Research summary
The main treatments which are known to be effective for carpal tunnel syndrome (entrapment of the median nerve in the wrist) are local corticosteroid injection and surgery. Some surgeons believe that injection before surgery results in poorer outcomes when surgery is eventually required compared to proceeding directly with surgery when the diagnosis is first made. We propose to examine whether this is the case by analysing the surgical outcomes of patients who have chosen injection initially compared with those proceeding direct to surgery.
