Research summary
Preparation for total knee replacement surgery, which typically includes patient education and advice, has been shown to reduce anxiety and improve compliance with rehabilitation. However there is a lack of wider research in this area, specifically concerning total knee replacement alone. Despite a variety of preparatory management strategies available e.g. information leaflets and videos, it is not known how well patients utilise and comply with these prior to their operation. Patient experiences in this area have not been fully explored. More research to establish whether pre-surgical preparation has an effect on post-operative anxiety and how this may effect rehabilitation is necessary.
This study will use a mixed methods approach. Two questionnaires will be provided to participants followed by a semi-structured interview. One questionnaire is regarding compliance with pre-surgical preparation, the second is a standardised questionnaire measuring anxiety. The semi-structured interview will explore with participants their experiences, both prior to the surgery and in the immediate post-operative period. Data collection will be conducted on the orthopaedic ward at Harrogate District Foundation Hospital. Data collection overall will last no more than one hour with each participant. Interviews will be audio recorded for later transcription, these will then be coded and analysed. The convenience sample will consist of 6-10 surgical participants (available on the ward at the time), 18 years of age or over, who have undergone total knee replacement surgery at Harrogate District Foundation Hospital. Participants will be a purposive selection, as they will need to meet the inclusion and exclusion criteria of the study.
