Research summary
In the United Kingdom (UK) the diagnosis of Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) in children and young people has been increasing in recent years. The UK now has the fifth largest population in the world and yet it has one of the poorest control rates. Many children do not meet the National Institute for Clinical excellence (NICE) 2014 guidelines for Haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c). These targets have been further revised in 2015, the target now being even lower.
The aim of this project is to gain a better understanding of how young people without diabetes influence those with T1D in a school setting, where the vast majority of this age group spend most of their time. The secondary aim is that this research will potentially influence or inform policy in the researchers own practice and that of the immediate clinical team. There is also the potential that the findings may influence or inform policy at network level, hopefully leading to further research in this important area.
The research will target adolescents aged 14-17 years old, asking for their views on both living with diabetes and the effect it has on them as well as non-diabetic peers views.
The project will use qualitative questionnaires that will be analysed by thematic analysis.
