  • Research summary

The proposed research is a feasibility trial which aims to explore the effectiveness of a manualised psychological consultation intervention (cognitive analytic consultancy; CAC). The research will be a collaboration between the University of Sheffield and Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust (RDaSH), and will be situation in the Trust. The effectiveness of the consultation will be assessed using outcome measures completed by both patients and care coordinators. The trial will utilise a ‘treatment as usual’ control as the comparator. As part of treatment as usual, participants will receive standard ongoing care in the community mental health team (CMHT). Participants within the control condition will be placed on a waiting list for a maximum of twelve weeks before progressing onto intervention. Participants will be identified for the intervention due to the presence of poor working relationships with the CMHT; informed consent to participate in the research will be sought. Participants will be both males and females over the age of 18 with a complex mental health problem. The duration of CAC is five weekly sessions (care coordinator; patient; consultant) and participants will be followed up at eight and twelve weeks. The intervention will be delivered by Clinical Psychologists. The differences between the arms will be assed at post treatment, and at both follow-ups. Interviews will be also completed with care dyads (care coordinator and patient) that demonstrate sustained change; qualitative analysis will be completed to explore which aspects of the consultation worked. The findings of the research will be utilised to inform the potential to conduct a larger-scale full clinical trial.
