  • Research summary

Statins are a group of drugs used to treat high cholesterol and reduce the risk of heart disease. A recently identified side effect of statins is that they can impair the body’s ability to regulate blood glucose (sugar), causing some people taking them to develop diabetes. The reason why this happens is not known at present.

One possibility is that statins might increase the body’s responsiveness to a naturally produced hormone called glucagon, which increases blood glucose levels. This study is is designed to investigate this possibility in humans, as if confirmed it could explain why statins cause diabetes.
