Research summary
Do 16-19 year olds understand sex and consent?
The aim of this study is to explore the attitudes of 16-19 year olds towards rape, sexual assault and sexual exploitation in relation to consent. Previous research has explored this topic using surveys and questionnaires and this study aims to build on this by exploring more deeply the ideas held by people within this age group; including factors which may influence their ideas, and where they feel they need additional support and education to understand the legal, social and moral issues that surround sex and consent.
Using interviews, six 16-19 year old participants will be given the opportunity to voice their opinions and ideas on this topic. By using real life scenarios it will also be possible to gage at what point people in this age group believe that consent to sex has or has not been given. As previous research has focused on female victims of rape and sexual assault, the idea of males being victims will also be explored.
Participants will be recruited from a busy inner city sexual health clinic with a diverse patient population group. To be included participants would need to be between the ages of 16 to 19 years old, with no history of sexual abuse, social services involvement or drug and alcohol related issues. The study will last for nine months and participants will be given a one hour interview exploring their views on the topic of sex and consent.REC name
