  • Research summary

This is a single centre, basic science study investigating the basic mechanisms of the common multifactorial disorder, type 1 diabetes (T1D).
Our goal is to gain an understanding of fundamental disease mechanisms and pathways identified through a combination of genetic and follow-up functional studies. To achieve this, we deploy a wide range of laboratory techniques and approaches to analyse a wide range of samples, from DNA samples to biopsy tissues, mostly from established biobanks or clinical collections.

We will also recruit participants from four key groups (patients with type 1 diabetes, patients with other autoimmune and inflammatory diseases, participants considered 'at risk' of T1D e.g. with a first degree relative with T1D, and participants without T1D. The participants will be invited to donate venous blood samples, finger prick blood samples, saliva samples and buccal cell samples. Depending upon which group the participants belong to and the age of the participant, the type and frequency of sample requests will vary.

Adults will be asked to donate venous blood samples up to four times a year, children once per year (except children without T1D who will donate on just one occasion).
Saliva and buccal cell samples will be collected every three months; the participant will be able to take the samples at home, and the samples will be sent directly to the Diabetes and Inflammation Laboratory in pre-paid envelopes.
All participants (or their parents in the case of children) will also be asked to complete a baseline questionnaire detailing medical an family history that will be reviewed at subsequent appointments.
Participants will stay on study and registered for call-backs until the study concludes (currently September 2020, but with the possibility of renewal), or they withdraw.

Funding for this study is provided by the JDRF and Wellcome.
