  • Research summary

The Dundee Longitudinal Integrated Clerkship (LIC), in which medical students spend their fourth year attached to a GP practice, is the first of its kind in the UK. Longitudinal clerkships aim to increase continuity of care and patient centeredness by allowing students to consult with patients in general practice and to follow them into secondary care as they receive further investigations or treatment. The LIC is currently a pilot in its second year. Initial research has found that students value the immersive experience offered by receiving their clinical teaching in a general practice environment and by following patients into secondary care for any further treatment or investigations required. This project aims to explore the experiences of the secondary care teachers and patients involved in the education of the LIC students. The evidence gained from the work proposed will contribute to the development of the LIC in future years, enhancing the experience for future students, teachers and patients. It will also contribute to the international body of literature on longitudinal clerkships. The study is a qualitative exploration of the Dundee Longitudinal Integrated Clerkship.
Semi-structured interviews will be used for data collection. Those eligible for participation are patients who have been seen by students undertaking the LIC, and secondary care clinicans involved in their teaching. Patients will be invited to attend individual interviews at their GP practice and secondary care teachers will be invited to attend individual interviews at their place of work. The interviews will be audio recorded and the anonymised recordings transcribed by a commercial transcriber. The data will then undergo a thematic analysis using a phenomenological approach in order to determine the themes characterising the lived experiences of the two subject groups in the areas of enquiry. The study is expected to take approximately 1 year to complete.
