  • Research summary

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a very common lung condition. People living with COPD are prone to chest infections called exacerbations. Earlier detection of exacerbations is important because it would allow earlier treatment. We aim to detect an exacerbation before the person recognises they are unwell by monitoring their heart rate and breathing rate whilst they are asleep. We will do this using a mattress pad device called 'DistaSense®'. The mattress pad will be used at home. One hundred people will be monitored for up to 12 months. Data from the pad is not being used to change care, in this study we are only assessing the potential for the pad to provide earlier detection of exacerbations.
