  • Research summary

In the over 40 years of age the advent of presbyopia (need to use different corrections for distance and near vision) produces a novel vision challenge dealt with progressive vision spectacles and multifocal contact lenses. For the latter group a number of commercial contact lenses are now available, most with a similar limitation, the correction of distance vision is limited to myopia (short sight) , hyperopia (long sight) associated with low level of astigmatism. However, the onset of presbyopia is associated with an increase in astigmatism, a significant proportion of the population having medium to high level of astigmatism needing correction. The approach in such a case is to combine a multifocal design contact lens that corrects presbyopia with a toric design that corrects astigmatism. Such a contact lens, ACUVUE® OASYS MAX 1-Day MULTIFOCAL for ASTIGMATISM has just received UK CA marking and is now commercially available for presbyopes with medium to high astigmatism. All multifocal contact lens designs produce some level of vision compromise leading to variable acceptance as main mode of vision correction. To date very little information is available on the clinical acceptance of the novel contact lenses to guide practitioners towards the most appropriate design to select for individual patients. The current study is a dispensing study that will measure the clinical acceptance in term of comfort and vision satisfaction over a ten-day period of wear to inform practitioners that will fit the novel contact lenses.
