  • Research summary

The aim of this study is to better understand the factors that influence South Asian women with eating disorders seeking NHS professional help in Bradford. The research will aim to identify the barriers and facilitators to accessing help seeking in South Asian women. The study also aims to understand more about how disordered eating is perceived in South Asian women living in Bradford from a cultural perspective. The findings from this research study will be used to understand how services can offer more culturally sensitive and appropriate services to South Asian women with disordered eating.

We will gather this information by conducting one to one interviews with South Asian women, which will be available in both English and Urdu. We will also be carrying out focus groups with South Asian women to identify possible barriers and facilitators for this population when accessing help for eating disorders (via a local South Asian women’s community resource centre, named, Roshni Ghar http://www.roshnighar.org.uk). We aim to recruit from a range of services ranging from NHS services to a number of voluntary organisations as well as local universities. We will recruit South Asian women over the age of 18 to take part in one to one interviews. This research will be conducted over a six month period, by recruiting South Asian women through community outreach programmes, of which the applicants hold excellent working connections with. We will also be recruiting via GP surgeries, community mental health teams (CMHTs) , university counselling services and a number of other voluntary and charitable organisations. As this population is often hard to recruit, we plan to recruit until we have saturated all possibilities in the proposed time frame. The analysis from the focus groups and one to one interviews will then be analysed via qualitative and quantitative methods.
