Research summary
The purpose of this study is to determine whether there are any differences between the rates of eating disorders and the percentage of people who have sought professional help among South Asian (SA) women aged 18 and older who are living in Bradford, UK. The research will also look to identify some of the factors (barriers and facilitators) influencing access for this population group.
We will gather this information via questionnaires (on-line or in person), which will be available in both English and Urdu. We will also be carrying out focus groups with SA women to identify possible barriers and facilitators for this population when accessing help for eating disorders (via a local SA women’s community resource Roshni Ghar http://www.roshnighar.org.uk). We aim to recruit from a range of sources and both on -line and face to face. This research will be conducted over a six month period, by recruiting SA women through community outreach programmes, of which the applicants hold excellent working connections. We will also be recruiting via GP surgeries, community mental health teams (CMHTs) , university counselling services and a number of other voluntary and charitable organisations. As this population is often hard to recruit we plan to recruit until we have saturated all possibilities in the proposed time frame. The analysis from the questionnaires and focus groups will then be analysed via qualitative and quantitative methods.
