Research summary
The United Kingdom has an ageing population and strategies to enable proactive health and social care provision have been proposed to support older people to remain healthy and independent but also care for them as they approach end of life.(NHS England 2014). A recent review of the Liverpool Care Pathway; More Care, Less Pathway – A review of the Liverpool Care Pathway (2013) found that care of the older person is of greatest concern; emphasising the need to ensure that services deliver respectful, responsive and personalised care to older people approaching their end of life. It is therefore timely to consider a broader perspective of what matters at end of life to consider how the frail older person’s choices of priorities and needs are recognised in the decision-making surrounding the provision of their care; one that considers the influences of all parties (healthcare professional, older person and carer) involved in end of life care.
