Research summary
The use of biliary scintigraphy which involves a radioisotope injection and scanning to study the function of gallbladder is an established method to investigate for gallbladder dysfunction by measuring gallbladder contraction. The scanning requires a fatty meal challenge which involved the intake of a specific diet with a certain amount of calorie and fat content prior to the study.
Ultrasound is a valid method in assessing the gallbladder structure and size.
The research aims to study the correlation of both techniques in the investigation of gallbladder contraction as a measurement of function. Patients will undergo the standard biliary scintigraphy with fatty meal challenge and at the same time have ultrasound measurement of the gallbladder size immediately before and after the biliary scintigraphy study. The difference in the size of the gallbladder on ultrasound will allow calculation of the gallbladder function and correlation with biliary scintigraphy to be made.
Once a correlation is established, ultrasound of age and gender matched individuals without signs and symptoms of biliary dysfunction can be performed on its own with fatty meal challenge to obtain a set normal range values. The normal range can then be extracted to be used with biliary scintigraphy.
