Research summary
Elevated levels of blood phosphate in dialysis patients is linked with a high incidence of heart attacks and strokes. A hormone called FGF23 is elevated to 1000 times its normal in response to the high blood phosphate. FGF23 is known to cause significant problems with the heart. We would like to examine if clearing phosphate better with long hours haemodialysis as against the conventional hospital based haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis results in lower levels of FGF23.
