Research summary
The most commonly used hearing test involves detecting quiet tones over earphones. However, the most frequent complaint expressed by people about their hearing is inability to follow speech in noisy backgrounds. Before we can develop a clinical test, we need to know how well we expect individuals with different levels of hearing to follow speech in a background of noise. The aim of this study is to gather this information in children with, and without, a hearing impairment.
