  • Research summary

National guidelines recommend that people living with dementia should be offered activities which are in line with their preferences, which may reduce behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD), such as agitation. Unfortunately for some people living with dementia (PLWD) in care homes these activities may not always be provided and are at risk of spending significant times of the day unengaged. Barriers include a lack of resources and an understanding in how to deliver personalised activities to people with advanced stages of dementia. The use of technology could potentially address these barriers. This research will explore how the use of a digital care record system called Person Centred Software (PCS), and widely available digital resources (such as video calls, music and photographs) could assist care staff to provide activities which are personalised to residents living with moderate to severe stages of dementia. This research will use qualitative methods to explore care staff views of the software and use of other digital resources. This will also include exploring the perspectives of friends and family of residents with advanced stages of dementia and people living with dementia in the community. Outcomes from the study will inform the development of future interventions to improve the provision of personalised activities for PLWD in care homes.
