Research summary
Being more physically active has important health benefits for everyone and this includes young people with cystic fibrosis. People with cystic fibrosis can experience additional benefits such as improved lung function, aerobic fitness, sputum clearance, as well as psychological and social benefits.
We are developing a digital intervention to help young people with cystic fibrosis to be more active and are doing this study to make sure that the content and format of the intervention is actually suitable, useful, and appropriate for the audience it is intended to help.
People will be eligible to take part if they are a parent of, or are someone who is between the ages of 12 and 18 years old and has cystic fibrosis.
The University of Exeter hosts the research and participants will be invited from various specialist CF paediatric clinics across the UK, charities and globally via social media. All activities will take place remotely from the comfort of their home. This study will involve one-to-one remote interviews. During these interviews participants will see versions of the digital resources. They will be asked to work through them (e.g., completing tasks, reading text, or watching a video) while saying out loud what they are thinking. This feedback will be used to make changes to the materials and a subsequent interview will be scheduled to look at new and/or refined materials.
Each participant will be asked to take part in up to 3 think-aloud interviews. This study will last 2 months, including time to analyse transcripts and revise intervention materials. However, participants’ time involvement will be much less. Each interview will take 30-40 minutes and there are no research-related activities, other than screening, consenting, and the interviews. This study is therefore very low in participant burden and can be done from their home.
