  • Research summary

Pathologists currently diagnose disease by looking at tissue sections with a microscope. The process often involves making assements of cellular characteristics which relate to changes in size shape and configuration. The assessments are done unaided and therefore subject to variation within and between pathologists. Recent developments have enanbled the digitisation of microscope slides so they can be seen on a computer, allowing computers to be programed to make the same quantitative assessments and give more accurate measurements of the degree of abnormality seen. This study creates computer algorithms to measure these attributes of digitised histopathology slides which we think will be useful in diagnosis or treatment and evaluates the effectiveness of the results against the clinical data of the cases examined.
The slides originate from clinical samples which have been taken during the course of treatment. These will be retrieved and scanned to generate digital images of the entire slides. The digitised slides are anonymised prior to scanning and before release to the researchers performing the digital algortithm development. The slides will be returned to file once they have been scanned.
