  • Research summary

The objective of this study is to co-produce, test and pilot a video-based intervention about living donor kidney transplantation, to inform the Black, Asian & Minority ethnic (BAME)communities in United Kingdom. The intervention will include a community ambassador training element. Focus groups consisting of past donors, recipients, community members and healthcare professionals from BAME communities will help us understand the current challenges and barriers to living donation. The project will develop an informative video based on the knowledge we gained from the focus groups, content will be culturally sensitive and encompass motivational and behavioural psychological theories. We will pilot the video for user acceptability and usability before further refining the content. The video will be used to train regional community ambassadors and its effectiveness will be tested in potential donors and recipients by means of a questionnaire. End Stage Renal Failure (ESRF) patients active on the national deceased donor waiting list will be invited to participate in this study, they will be able to watch the video with their social network (family and friends). Patients and their social network will be offered the opportunity to discuss living kidney donation with a trained community ambassador following this. Interested potential donors will be referred to the University Hospital of Leicester NHS Trust transplant team, and the number of successful living kidney donations as a result of this project will be recorded. The project aims to produce videos that would be specific to each target community.

The impact of the digital intervention will be to overcome current barriers and increase knowledge and intentions of Living Donor Kidney Transplantation (LDKT), eventually leading to successful donations.
