  • Research summary

A retrospective study analysing the MRI images of women who have undergone uterine artery embolisation (UAE)for the treatment of uterine fibroids from 2010 to date in NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. Patients would usually have an MRI before and 6 months after UAE and we intend to analyse these images retrospectively. The MRI images include a specific sequence known as diffusion weighted MRI sequence. These sequences can give information on the integrity of cells in a certain regions of interest (fibroid, myometrium and endometrium). The diffusion of water between the cells and the integrity of the cell wall can be quantified using MRI software (Functool) and a reproducible measure known as Apparent Diffusion Coefficient (ADC value) can be produced and analysed. This will then be matched to the outcome of the patients after 2 years of treatment which can be obtained from the Information Services Division in Scotland.
