Research summary
Distressing abdominal symptoms affect many patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) psychologically and with impaired quality of life. A questionnaire for measuring difficulties of life (DOL) due to symptoms in patients with UC has recently been constructed and validated in Japan. We are asking patients with UC attending King’s College Hospital Gastroenterology outpatients to participate (number 100) in a comparative study with a Japanese centre by filling out questionnaires that address DOL as well as adherence to taking one of the 5 Aminisalicylic acid (5-ASA) preparations, which is one of the most important determinate of well-being in UC.
A validity study will also be carried out in the same patients, which is standard for these type of studies.
This will be the first study of its kind in the UK to quantitate DOL issues in UC, which should give a measure of the impact that the disease has and its relation to consistency of taking 5-aminosalicylic acid preparations. The comparison with Japanese patients with the same conditions is important in order to assess the effect of any differences due to cultural background and patient’s expectations.REC name
