Research summary
There is strong evidence that exist, about the role of salt intake in hypertension management. Lowering dietary salt intake is one of the key component in prevention, care and management of diabetic complications in hypertensive, type 2 diabetes patients.
Diet & Nutrition surveys conducted in UK reported that salt intake of general population is higher than recommended levels. The aim of this project is to determine the knowledge of hypertensive,type 2 diabetes patients about the role of salt in health and assess their level of dietary salt intake. We also, want to find out how we can make it easy to reduce salt intake in the diet of diabetes patients.The study participants will be recruited from outpatient diabetes clinic, Basildon Hospital. The study will be carried out in phases as follows:
Phase 1:Diet survey on diabetes, high blood pressure and salt.
Timeline: 6 months (February 2016- July 2016)This will include sample size of sixty patients with coexisting type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure (hypertension), in age range of 20-75 years.Questionnaire method will be used to collect information on their understanding of role of salt in health and their dietary intake.
Phase 2 & 3: Development & validation of dietary salt intake calculator.
Timeline: 12 months (August 2016 - August 2017)The information on dietary intake, shall be studied and analyzed for development of dietary salt intake calculator.
Phase 4: Evaluating the usefulness of the dietary salt calculator in type 2 diabetes and hypertension.
Timeline: 6 months ( September 2017 - February 2018)This salt calculator will be used to provide dietary education to twenty patients with coexisting type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure. Two dietary education session shall be given to these participants at an interval of three months and their salt intake shall be determined.
