Research summary
This study aims to evaluate the impact that fixed orthodontic appliances have patients eating habits and also to examine the types of television advertising that adolescent patients are subjected to. The project will therefore be split into two parts: i) Evaluation of the changes in patient’s diets following placement of fixed appliances, to take place at baseline, six weeks, and six months, in order to evaluate initial changes in diet as well as any adaptions. The subjects will be assessed via diet diaries and semi-structured interviews to provide further evidence and provide a conceptual context to any changes witnessed, ii) Television advertisements will be recorded and analysed by coding to assess the proportion of non-core or HFSS (foods high in fats, salt &/or sugars), that young patients are subject to. Although there are laws that now limit such exposure during peak child viewing times, there is evidence to suggest that advertisers are able to circumvent such legislation by showing unsuitable advertisements during other periods when many children are still viewing. This aspect of the research will investigate this phenomenon and possible effects on orthodontic patients.
