Research summary
An ileostomy is a surgical opening in the ileum that diverts faeces into an external bag. Ileostomies may be created due to cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, injury or obstruction in the bowel and can be temporary (loop ileostomy) or permanent. The formation of an ileostomy can have a major impact on someone's life, including on what and when they choose to eat and drink. People may be advised to avoid or limit foods or food groups to control output and avoid blockage, gas or odour but we know that dietary advice is mainly based on expert opinion articles which can be contradictory. Despite this, there is little research on what people with ileostomies choose to eat and on the symptoms they experience; on whether food habits and symptoms change much between the early months of formation and after a year and on whether satisfaction with dietary advice improves stoma-related symptoms and quality of life.
We will ask people with newly formed ileostomies to complete questionnaires and on-line dietary recalls at 6-10 weeks after formation when the ileostomy should be working normally and again 12-months after formation. We will ask people about dietary habits, symptoms and quality of life and what they think about the dietary advice they have received. We will report these at both timepoints and explore if good experiences of dietary advice are linked to fewer symptoms and better quality of life and if number and severity of symptoms are linked to use of the health service.
The results of the study will be used to find out what people with ileostomies are eating, what foods are most likely to cause symptoms shortly after formation and at 12-months, if we need to give people better dietary advice and can give more information on what changes to expect.REC name
