  • Research summary

Patients with kidney failure are treated by dialysis. Blood is pumped from the patient into a dialyzer and then returned to the patient. In the dialyzer blood passes through a hollow tube with fresh dialysis water passing on the outside of the tube. Molecules pass between the blood and dialysis by diffusion. The used dialysis water is then discarded and pumped down the drain.
We wish to make measurements of the waste dialysis water in the drain. During dialysis patients are at increased risk of developing an irregular heart-beat, this is thought to be due to changes in the electrolytes (salts) in the blood. We wish to monitor the electrolytes in the waste dialysis water to better understand the changes which occur during dialysis and this may help to reduce the risk of developing an irregular heart-beat.
