Research summary
Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions which cause damage to the nerves at the back of the eye. The most common type, and the subject of this study, is open angle glaucoma. Open angle glaucoma develops slowly over time and gives rise to few, if any, symptoms until it reaches an advanced stage. While some vision loss is common at diagnosis, with early detection and treatment serious vision loss is rare. Recent research has suggested that a new visual field test (Smart Supra Perimetry) will be faster and more sensitive than the ones we routinely use in hospital clinics including Manchester. The purpose of this study is to test such claims.
A sample of 100 patients attending the glaucoma clinic at the Royal Eye Hospital with early/suspect glaucoma or no glaucoma will undergo visual field tests to understand the functional loss and a non-invasive imaging test to take cross-section pictures of the retina to understand the structural changes to the optic nerve and macula. The study will be conducted over a period of 1 year. The accuracy in diagnosis of the new visual field test tests will be established by comparing results with the standard visual field test and the retinal imaging report.
