Research summary
Carotid atherosclerosis or carotid plaque is the accumulation of substances on the arterial wall of carotid artery that might disturb blood flow inside the artery and lead to further damage such as stroke.
Earlier detection of unstable carotid plaque might help in preventing stroke from happening as 20% of stroke cases is related to carotid artery plaque. Several methods can diagnose and evaluate carotid plaque, one novel technique is the shear wave elastography (SWE) which can evaluate the elasticity non-invasively. Texture analysis of carotid plaque ultrasound images is also non-invasive way which can identify plaque contents and helping on differentiation between plaque types. The objective of this research is to combine both SWE and texture analysis of ultrasound images on patients with atherosclerotic carotid artery in the University hospital of Wales to develop a better objective method for evaluating the vulnerability of carotid artery plaques compared to the established Grey-Weale classification (GW scoring) system.REC name
