Research summary
Recently there has been a growing interest in sports-professionals who have developed dementia at a young age. This has led to fears of the potential impact of their sport in later life and how sporting organisations should provide support for their athletes. The study will explore the situation of living with a diagnosis of young-onset dementia (<65yrs) for people who played contact sports (rugby, boxing etc.) in their life. The study will interview 30 sports-people with young-onset dementia, or their immediate carers, around how support they have been after diagnosis, with an aim of mapping their landscape of support, including their sports organisations, health-care, and social networks. Recruitment will be through social media, charities, and NHS. Interviews will be conducted online or face-to-face at participant's homes or Mersey Care hospitals if more convenient. Each participant will be interviewed once and be given the opportunity to discuss the findings at a later date.
