Research summary
Inflammatory skin diseases are common and affect up to 20% of the population. However, despite skin symptoms being a leading cause for consultations in primary care, diagnostic approaches have not seen significant advances over the last decades. Inflammatory skin reactions often present with similar morphology and diagnostic problems frequently lead to inappropriate (e.g. antibiotic treatment when there is no infection) or delayed treatment. Even experienced dermatologists can fail to accurately diagnose lesions when based exclusively on clinical appearance. This project is about exploring the potential of non-invasive diagnostic approaches which we have recently developed. It is not focused on a single disease subgroup but on the feasibility and potential of non-invasive diagnostics (collecting and analysing superficial skin material by tape stripping, hair root analysis or washing fluid) compared to current standard of care.
