Research summary
The Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Service for Wales (DRSSW) is an all Wales service designed to detect sight threatening diabetic retinopathy at an early stage before visual loss occurs, ensuring early treatment and preventing loss of vision in 70-90% of people with sight threatening diabetic retinopathy. Approximately 15% to 25% of individuals with diabetes develop a foot ulcer at some point in their lifetime and an estimated 12% of those patients require lower extremity amputation. The cause of these ulceration’s are most often due to loss of protective sensation or poor blood flow to the feet. Preventative measures could be put in place if these at risk feet can be identified early enough however unlike retinopathy there is no formal screening service for the foot resulting in many ’at risk’ feet going undetected. \n\nWhat we are proposing is a two month feasibility/pilot study, to trial the integration of diabetic foot screening(protective sensation and blood supply) into the retinopathy screening service at two local Health Boards within Wales (Cwm Taf and Cardiff and Vale).\n
