  • Research summary

Guidelines to self-manage blood glucose profiles for people with type 1 diabetes are available for adults. However empirical evidence questions the suitability and indeed safety of these guidelines for young people who may experiment with more risk taking behaviour, including binge drinking, than the majority of the adult population. National guidelines and the literature provides insufficient detail as to whether alcohol management guidelines specific to young people are needed, and what this should include. A deeper understanding of how young people with diabetes manage their condition whilst drinking alcohol, their knowledge of the effect of alcohol on blood glucose and the social context of alcohol consumption would help inform guidelines, education and advice to young people with type 1 diabetes.

This qualitative MSc dissertation involves semi-structured interviews of up to 12 young people (18-21 years) who have type 1 diabetes. Participants will be recruited from the diabetes young persons service of a large teaching hospital.
