Research summary
Context: Danes Camp Medical Centre in Northamptonshire established a diabetic clinic aiming to improve diabetes management in the region. However, a review of the clinic's operations since its initiation in April revealed that only 5% of patients referred to the clinic have opted into group consultations. The goal of the clinic is to improve how we manage diabetes care, make the most out of every appointment and get the best use out of our resources. The lack of uptake suggests there are potential barriers preventing the effective use of these sessions.
Aims: The aim is to uncover why healthcare professionals are not referring patients to group sessions and why patients themselves are hesitant to join these sessions. We are looking to identify factors that might encourage people to take part in group sessions and to assess if it is practical to continue investing resources in this format.
Strategy: To find the answers, we will conduct semi-structured interviews with healthcare professionals and patients who are already attending the diabetic clinic. This approach will help us gather detailed insights directly from those involved.
Impact: The findings from this study are anticipated to significantly influence the organisation and promotion of group sessions at our clinic. By understanding the current barriers and opportunities, we can restructure our sessions to better meet patient needs, make more efficient use of our resources, and enhance the overall management of diabetes care in our community.REC name
