  • Research summary

When adults are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, we know little about how they learn to live with this life-changing condition. Understanding their experiences is crucial as it would help clinicians be more informed and support them in these early months. Gaining an understanding oif these experiences are integral in developing the understanding that we do not have currently. Therefore, I plan to talk to people soon after they are diagnosed, three months later, and six months later to gain insights into their experiences.
The participants will be recruited from two hospital diabetes centres who will continue to provide diabetes care to all the participants throughout the study period, ensuring the credibility and reliability of the study.
When the diabetes teams confirm the person's Type 1 Diabetes diagnosis, the researcher will contact the potential participants who have given consent for this contact to the diabetes team. This contact with potential participants will be made with utmost sensitivity. Ample time will be provided for them to consider their participation decision, empowering them to make a fully informed decision about their involvement and ensuring the ethical conduct of the study.
If willing to participate, the researcher will arrange three interviews: one at six weeks post-diagnosis, one at three months, and one at six months. These interviews, whether conducted face-to-face or remotely, are crucial in understanding the participants' experiences and will be scheduled at a time that minimises the time and inconvenience burden on the participant.
Once the interviews have taken place, the data will be analysed and interpreted over a six-month longitudinal time. This aims to generate a rich and deep understanding of the lived experience during this time of change. The insights gleaned from the participants' experiences will provide fundamental data, offering a sense of the lived experience.
