  • Research summary

Collapse and Falls are frequent presentations to the Emergency Department. Frequently, this results in traumatic injuries which warrant surgery and/or admission to critical care. A high proportion of falls is cardiogenic in origin, and detection of cardiac causes is important for safe discharge, but also for a safe administration of anaesthetic and post-operative care. With the surge of interest and usage of point-of-care ultrasound in the clinical setting, echocardiograms are often performed on these patients as part of the initial clinical work-up. However, point-of-care protocols are simplified versions of a full departmental echocardiogram and do not generally include a search for valvular abnormalities that can lead to falls and syncope, or delay surgery on short notice, such as Aortic stenosis.

This study aims to explore whether a measurement of Dimensionless Index - a function of flow measurements across the aortic valve - could be accurately, efficiently and reproducibly performed by non-echocardiographers in the point-of care setting to aid patient diagnosis and discharge.
